Birth control with no side effects.

Birth control pills, also known as oral contraceptives or simply "the Pill," are taken daily to prevent pregnancy and create a regular period. Birth control pills contain varying amounts of estrogen, or estrogen and progestin combinations, which cause the body to stop ovulating and release the uterine lining during breaks from taking the Pill. Although there is no birth control pill that has zero side effects in every patient, there are several oral contraceptives that have a lower instance of them.

    Progestin-Only Pills

  1. Progestin-only pills, also known as the "mini-pill," is different than most birth control pills because it doesn't contain the usual progestin and estrogen combination. Because the pill contains no estrogen, there are far fewer side effects than other pills. The progestin-only pill is recommended by doctors for women who are smokers, have a history of stroke or heart attack, and are older than 35, as most estrogen-containing birth control pills put these people at risk for heart attack, stroke or blood clots. Brand name examples of progestin-only birth control pills include Micronor, Nor-QD and Ovrette.
  2. Low-Dose Pills

  3. Low-dose birth control pills contain 35 micrograms or less of estrogen. The lowest amount of estrogen present in these low-estrogen pills is 20 micrograms. These pills have fewer side effects and carry a lower risk of stroke and blood clots. Nausea, vomiting and hot flashes are common side effects that are greatly lowered in the low-dose versus the typical birth control pill.
  4. Warnings

  5. There is no birth control pill that has no side effects. There is still a small risk of stroke, heart attack and blood clots associated with low-dose and progestin-only birth control pills, and it is not recommended that you smoke while taking any birth control pills. Not every pill is right for every individual, so if you have unusual symptoms while taking your prescription, contact your doctor and switch to a different contraceptive method.
