Amazon Rainforest Survival Guide

Save

Despite the fact the Amazon rainforest is progressively dwindling due to deforestation, it is still vast and people find themselves needing to survive in it on a regular basis. So it is important to know how to survive in this type of seemingly impenetrable, endless jungle if you are unfortunate enough to find yourself stranded there for an extended period of time. While access to food and water are the first concerns, keeping yourself safe from wild animals and knowing what not to consume is also important.

Water Considerations

While it is a rain forest, which by definition means it rains regularly, it is still rather difficult to obtain water which is not contaminated and is safe for you to drink. Drinking bad water can make you very sick and lead to parasites growing in your stomach which can sometimes kill you, among other unpleasant things. Boiling drinking water for at least three minutes or using purifying water tablets will kill any of these bacteria that might affect you are recommended remedies. If none of the implements to do that are available to you, drinking the dew from leaves or the water inside certain nuts and berries is safe, but won't keep you hydrated for long.

Edible Plants

There are many plants or fruits from these plants which can be eaten. However, there are just as many that are incredibly poisonous. So it is important to know the difference. Any nut or fruit picked from a plant that you are not sure of should be boiled in water for at least three minutes to rid any poisons or toxins that could hurt you. A free-standing palm tree is the Chonta or Wasai tree, which you can cut down with a machete (another must in the rainforest). Cut loose the light green colored part of the trunk or stem about 1 meter below where the leaves start. This you can eat raw without cooking. It has a very pleasant taste, unlike other palm trees. The Sachamani is a green colored plant whose blossoms have five points like a star and are good to eat, as they are high in protein.

Animal Hunting and Protection

It is also important to set traps for animals, not only to catch them but to protect yourself from them at night. While there are slip knot traps and spear traps which can be built with some effort, a harpoon is probably the best and easiest weapon and hunting implement that you can design even with limited resources. Find a sturdy branch or stick that you can throw and tie your hunting knife or machete to it with rope, shoelaces or long vines. This will allow you to hunt boar and fish in the jungle and defend yourself against larger animals like panther who may try to hunt you.
