Determine the Type of Transfer Case

Check the 4x4 switch module to ensure it can be shifted into "neutral". Several types of transfer cases were used on the S10 4x4 model, and the ability to put it into neutral will allow the truck to be towed with a tow bar, with all four wheels on the ground. If there is no neutral position, then the truck will require a front tow dolly or full trailer to lift the front wheels off of the ground. Severe damage can occur when the 4x4 system of the S10 is towed with the front wheels on the ground, and the transfer case is not shifted into neutral. Disconnection of the rear drive train is optional, but can prevent the transmission from turning and suffering damage in extreme conditions.
