The Chevrolet S10 4x4 can be towed by a larger vehicle with a front wheel tow dolly, a bumper-mounted tow bar, or a full-sized tow trailer. Different types of towing require certain drive train types and special procedures that allow the truck to be safely pulled behind another vehicle.

  1. Determine the Type of Transfer Case

    • Advanced 4x4 switch module

Check the 4x4 switch module to ensure it can be shifted into "neutral". Several types of transfer cases were used on the S10 4x4 model, and the ability to put it into neutral will allow the truck to be towed with a tow bar, with all four wheels on the ground. If there is no neutral position, then the truck will require a front tow dolly or full trailer to lift the front wheels off of the ground. Severe damage can occur when the 4x4 system of the S10 is towed with the front wheels on the ground, and the transfer case is not shifted into neutral. Disconnection of the rear drive train is optional, but can prevent the transmission from turning and suffering damage in extreme conditions.

    Hitching Up the S10 4x4

    • Connect the towing hardware to the tow vehicle's rated hitch by installing a tow bar or dolly to the front of the S10, or loading the truck onto a trailer. A trailer will have built-in lighting, while the bar or dolly may require the installation of towing lights (magnetic mounted lights will stick to the most body panels of the S10).

    Pulling the Weight

    • Determine if the towing vehicle can handle the weight of the S10 4x4, which could easily top two tons of total pulled weight. The towing vehicle should outweigh the S10 and hardware, and have a high quality towing hitch. Bumper mounted hitches may not have the strength to pull the S10, so installing a Class-3 frame-mounted hitch to the towing vehicle is highly recommended.

    Stopping and turning

    • Use a full-sized trailer, if possible, for the benefits of control. Most of these larger car trailers will have electric brakes and other safety features that can make the towing experience more enjoyable. Panic stops, tire wear, and possible drive train damage can be avoided by using a full-sized car trailer.
