The use of magnets for weight loss has become more popular over recent years. Magnets have effects on cellular activity on the body which some people believe provide weight loss possibilities.
Magnets are said to have the ability to cause weight loss by changing cellular physiology within the body. This process is called bio-magnetism and increases cellular respiration, meaning carbohydrates and fats (macronutrients) are broken down into usable forms of energy. By increasing the rate of cellular respiration, the amount of calories used by your body also increases. In theory, the energy balance within the body becomes negative, and you lose weight by burning stored fats. However, a 1994 study by the University of Oregon showed that the increase in cellular respiration was negligible.
The wearing of ear magnets to produce weight loss is a common form of therapy. Two magnets per ear are worn for 30 to 60 minutes per day. Although there are three to four points in each ear used for stimulating weight loss, only four points should be used per ear daily. As one ear is usually more sensitive than the other, both ears are used in a prolonged course of therapies. One course of treatment lasts six weeks, followed by two weeks of rest, then another six-week course of treatment if necessary.
Some people believe magnets have a number of effects on the body when used for weight loss. They say appetite is suppressed, the stomach can give the feeling of fullness, digestion is regulated and nervous tension is reduced. It is also claimed that magnets can be effective in the management of dietary medical issues such as diabetes, but no studies back this up.
