What to Do for Knee Pain?

Knee pain can range from a minor nuisance to a debilitating condition, depending on the severity of your pain and your lifestyle. If you lead an active lifestyle, your knee pain may hinder your ability to participate in your favorite activities. When you experience pain in one or both knees it is important that you are proactive in your response to the pain so that your condition does not worsen. There are some immediate steps you should consider taking whenever you feel pain in your knees, especially if the pain is severe or out of the ordinary.

Take a Breather

If you experience knee pain during an activity, such as running or step aerobics, it will be wise for you to take a break from that activity. Continuing an activity that has resulted in knee pain, could cause your pain to become worse and result in further injury if you did in fact injure your knee. Limit your activity for several days to see if the pain subsides.

Immediate Relief

In addition to taking a break from your routine, there are some immediate things you can do to help alleviate your new pain. You can use a cold compress on your knee to help numb your pain and reduce any swelling that may have occurred. You can also take a pain killer such as Ibuprofen to help take the edge off. Be careful with pain killers, however, as they can mask pain and cause you to be less careful when participating in activities that you might cause further knee sensitivity.

Evaluate Possible Causes of Knee Pain

Knee pain can result from an exercise that is performed incorrectly. You may want to talk to a personal trainer about your new pain to see if you need to adjust the way you complete certain exercises that may be causing your pain. Your knee pain could be the result of doing a squat incorrectly or having the wrong pedal settings on your exercise bike. Additionally, review your warm up routine with a trainer to make sure you are achieving an adequate warm up before you begin exercising.

See a Doctor

If your knee pain does not subside or becomes worse, it's a good idea to visit an orthopedic doctor who can properly evaluate the causes of your knee pain and advise you what the best course of action is to take in order to get some relief.
