French Maid Costume Ideas

The French maid costume is based on the common 19th century uniform of female servants. Over time it has become the stereotypical costume for maids in popular culture. It makes a distinctive and recognizable costume. The French maid uniform is also simple to make with very few items. The costume can range from conservative to risque.

Dress

A plain black dress is the basis of the French maid uniform. The skirt length can vary based on the preference of the wearer. More risque costumes typically use very short skirts. The skirt will not usually be any longer than knee length, even for more conservative costumes. Sleeveless dresses are not commonly used, but short or long sleeves are both appropriate for this costume. Some French maid dresses will also have white cuffs on the sleeves.

Apron

A white apron or pinafore is the piece that changes the black dress into a French maid costume. Pinafores are the full aprons that also cover the shoulders. A white apron can also be used. The top half of a pinafore, with the shoulder sections, can be used with a white apron to leave a black midriff in the costume. Some French maid dresses will have a piece of white fabric under the neckline to replace the missing top half of the pinafore.

Headpiece

Some sort of headwear is usually worn with a French maid uniform, typically a white cloth tiara. A ribbon can be a much simpler alternative. Tie the ribbon into a large bow centered on the top of the head. The ribbon can be black or white.

Finishing Touches

Black stockings and black shoes, preferably high-heeled, complete the costume. A feather duster is a common prop. If the dress has a low neckline, a black or white choker looks good.
