Eye puffiness can be caused by a number of factors from allergies to lack of rest. Eye puffiness can not only make you look drawn and tired, it can be irritating too. By following a few simple home remedies, and making some changes to your diet and lifestyle, you can easily heal eye puffiness, and also prevent it from recurring.

Cucumbers

Cucumbers are one of the oldest, and most effective home remedies for healing eye puffiness and dark circles under the eyes. They work as an anti-inflammatory, and can be applied in one of two ways. One option is to cut the cucumber into 1/4 inch thick slices, chill in the refrigerator, then apply directly to the eyes for 10-15 minutes. Alternately, puree a cucumber into a smooth, thick paste. Chill in the refrigerator, then apply an even coat of the paste directly to the puffy area of the eyes. Let sit for 10-15 minutes, then rinse the face thoroughly. You can keep both the cucumber slices and cucumber paste in the refrigerator for up to 4 days, allowing you to easily re-apply if eye puffiness re-occurs.

Cold Compress

Wrap a handful of ice cubes inside a wash cloth, and place over the eyes for 10-15 minutes, removing for a few seconds at a time if the compress feels too cold. Alternately, soak a washcloth in cold water, and place over the eyes, or wrap a bag of frozen vegetables inside a washcloth, and place over the eyes for 10-15 minutes. A cold compress will instantly reduce eye puffiness, and rejuvenate the skin.

Tea Bags

Tea bags are also known to reduce eye puffiness and dark circles. Brew a pot of tea, and place the used tea bags in the refrigerator to chill. Put a tea bag over each eye, and let sit for 15-20 minutes. Then rinse your face with cool water to wash off any excess tea residue. Tea bags can be placed back in the refrigerator for up to a week, and re-used if the eyes start to swell again.

Change in Lifestyle

There are also a few lifestyle changes that can be incorporated into your daily routine to keep eye puffiness at bay. Drink at least two quarts of water each day, as this will keep the body and skin hydrated, and prevent inflammation. Also limit your sodium intake, as sodium is known to make the body retain water, causing puffiness and swelling. The body also needs about 8 hours of sleep each night to function properly, so try to get a full 8 hours of rest each night.
