Dry & Scaly Skin Treatments

Save

Dry and scaly skin must be nurtured in several ways. Simple moisture creams and lotions from the drug store may not be effective or may contain chemicals and preservatives that irritate extremely dry and sensitive skin. Natural treatments for dry and scaly skin are an inexpensive way to improve skin's texture. Some of the ingredients are even staples in most kitchens.

Exfoliate

  • Sometimes dry and scaly skin needs to be exfoliated thoroughly in order to remove some of the dead skin that has built up. This dry, dead skin needs to be removed because not only does it contribute to the dryness, it can also house harmful bacteria that can cause skin infection as well as unpleasant body odor.

A valuable body and facial scrub is white or brown sugar. Sugar, which is derived from sugar cane, contains glycolic acid. Glycolic acid is an ingredient that goes beneath skin's exterior to not only remove and exfoliate dry skin, but also to heal damage that is on its way to the outer layer. By treating skin beneath the surface, soft skin will appear and start a new healthy cycle.

Simply take a cup of sugar, dampen the body and scrub the skin using circular motions. Massage the body for a few minutes with the sugar before rinsing thoroughly with water. Sugar is also a superb anti-aging facial scrub.

Moisturize

  • Vitamin E oil is a powerful skin healer. It lubricates cell membranes and boosts cell regeneration. It is a free radical scavenger which means it prevents and heals skin damage. Olive oil is a legendary skin softener. It is an outstanding skin moisturizer because it contains oleic acid. Oleic acid helps skin become more permeable and allows skin to hold necessary moisture.

Combining vitamin E oil and olive oil creates an intensive moisture treatment that effectively treats dry and scaly skin. This treatment can be used on both the face and body.

For a night facial treatment, mix ¼ teaspoon of vitamin E oil with ¼ teaspoon of olive oil and smooth over the face and neck. For the rest of the body, combine one part vitamin E oil with four parts olive oil and apply to the skin after a shower. Concentrate on parts that are most dry.
