As disgusting as it may be, some dogs have a knack for eating poop. Whether it's their own or another dog's, this bad habit is fairly common among canines.

Rather than figuring out why your dog is doing it, getting it to stop is the key. From food additives to behavior modifications, there are various ways to stop your dog from this disgusting habit. By stopping this bad behavior, your dog will have better hygiene and avoid disease.

    Spray

  1. Make the feces less desirable to the dog. To do this, you can spray the dog poop in the yard with something that will deter your pet from wanting to sniff it, let alone eat it.

Try spraying something spicy on the feces. A hot ingredient such as Tabasco sauce or pepper spray is a good option. Bitter apple spray, pickle juice or orange spray could also deter the dog. Many of these can be found at your local grocery or pet stores.
  2. Keep the Dog Busy

  3. Sometimes, dogs eat feces simply because they're bored or it's a novelty. If they aren't getting enough attention, or they're a puppy and are curious, they may start eating feces.

To offset this, take them for daily walks and make sure when you're walking near dog droppings to pull the leash and admonish them for their bad behavior.

Buy them toys. If they have a tennis ball or dog toy, they may be more apt to chew on that than go after feces.

Keeping them busy with exercise and toys will keep their minds off getting into mischief and into trouble in the yard or park.
  4. Food Additives

  5. If keeping the dogs busy or placing a natural spray on your dog's feces doesn't work, try using food additives.

Stop Eating Poop, S.E.P., is a natural additive that you apply to your dog's food. The main ingredient is glumatic acid. When the acid is mixed your dog's stomach acids, it will create bitter-tasting poop.

Sprinkle a small amount of S.E.P. (1/4 tsp. to 3/4 tsp., depending on weight) one time per day. The additive is not recommended for cats.

Other products include: For-bid, which creates a bitter taste using sodium glutamate and vegetable protein; Dis-taste, which comes in tablet or sprinkle form; and Deter, which comes in the form of a tablet.
