Best Remedies for a Sore Throat

The medical term for a sore throat is pharyngitis. Causes of a sore throat range from allergies to strep throat. There are many remedies you can use at home as soon as you notice that your throat is a little sore. These remedies can get rid of the sore throat or hold you over until you can have a doctor examine you.

  1. Salt Water

    • Mix one tsp. of salt with an eight-oz. glass of warm water. Gargle a gulp of the salt water for 15 seconds and then spit it out. Repeat this until the entire glass of salt water is gone. This should be done every other hour until the sore throat is gone. The salt works to dry up the throat. Bacteria can grow only in moist conditions. By using the salt, you deprive the bacteria of what they need to grow. So the bacteria die, and you get well.

    Cayenne Pepper

    • Place one tsp. of cayenne pepper in an eight-oz. glass of warm water. Mix and then use to gargle. You can either spit the cayenne water out or swallow it. Repeat every hour until your sore throat is gone. The cayenne pepper breaks up any mucus that is in your throat and increases circulation there.

Tip: You may want to rinse your mouth with water after you use the cayenne pepper solution just to get rid of its taste.

    Apple Cider Vinegar

    • Apple cider vinegar is used as a home remedy for sore throats because the acid in it can kill the source of the infection. Mix one part apple cider vinegar and two parts water in a small glass. Gargle with this solution and then swallow it. You can do this every hour until you have gotten rid of the sore throat.

Tip: Rinse your mouth with water after each use of the apple cider vinegar. Otherwise, the acid will eat away at your teeth.
