Heel-Toe Shifting Techniques

Skills and techniques for race driving are often applicable to driving street cars. Certain race driving techniques provide drivers with tools to stabilize and better control their street cars. Techniques like heel-and-toe downshifting better familiarize drivers with braking and balance in a vehicle.

    1. Applications

      • This method of downshifting is typically used by race drivers. It is used to achieve smooth, quick downshifts without upsetting a car's balance front to back. Heel and toe downshifting may also used when driving street cars.

      Technique

      • Begin by braking to the ball of the right foot to slow the car. Firm pedal pressure will prevent any foot slippage. Depress the clutch with the left foot while continuing to brake with the right foot. Then, move the shifter to the next lower gear desired. Next, while braking and with the clutch depressed, the driver must "blip" the throttle. A "blip" is a pronounced, quick surge of engine rpms to match the revs of the engine with that of the drive line. To "blip", a driver must roll his or her right foot (while still braking) depressing the accelerator. As the engine rpms rise and nearly peak the driver must release and engage the clutch. The drive then resumes or completes the process of braking down to the desired speed.

      Goal

      • The above steps should be practiced in the driver's mind forming a smooth, uninterrupted sequence of pedal movements. With practice this method of braking and accomplishing efficient downshifts should become automatic and subconscious mechanics. Ultimately, heel and toe downshifting should flow smoothly and subconsciously for a driver.
