Pocket PCs are great miniature computers for surfing the Internet, checking email and taking notes. Not only are they portable, but most pocket PCs have long-lasting batteries so you can use them for hours without charging or replacing the battery. Pocket PCs have specialized operating systems that are just as powerful as regular desktop or laptop computer' operating systems. With the right tips, your Pocket PC can be a valuable tool for years.

    Soft Reseting Your Pocket PC

  1. When problems arise on your Pocket PC---device freezing, running slow, losing data or other issues---perform a soft reset to try to correct the problem. Also, reboot the computer you use to ActiveSync (connecting the pocket computer to your desktop/laptop computer) the Pocket PC with. Soft resetting your pocket computer will help resolve many issues your pocket computer may be having. Check your Pocket PC owner's manual on how to soft reset the device. Most devices have a "Reset" button on the bottom of the unit, but check the manual to be sure.
  2. Email & Pocket PCs

  3. If you are having trouble accessing emails when using your pocket computer, check your POP3 mail settings to make sure the settings are all correct. The POP3 mail settings are for receiving emails and the SMTP settings are for sending emails. Check both settings and make sure they match what was provided to you by your ISP. If using a wireless connection, you may have to obtain and change the settings so your pocket computer and the wireless connection settings match. Note---after you have the wireless connection's settings, create different profiles for each wireless connection you use in your town or city.
  4. Your Pocket PC & Desktop PC Connection

  5. When using ActiveSync, don't reboot your desktop/laptop when your Pocket PC is connected to it, no matter how it is connected---USB, Ethernet, infrared or serial. Restarting the main computer while connected to the pocket computer can damage the Pocket PC. Also, don't connect more than one mobile device---Pocket PC or handheld PC---to your main computer at the same time. You can have multiple serial cable/cradle or USB cable/cradle connected to the main computer at the same time, but the different devices cannot be plugged into the cradles. If you have one pocket computer device, connect the unit to your main computer or place the device in the cradle each night for charging/syncing. If your Pocket PC has an external power supply, plug in the unit each night.
  6. Backup Your Pocket PC

  7. Just like with desktop and laptop computers, Pocket PCs need to be backed up in case of a system error or a hard-drive crash. Most backups are done during the ActiveSync process, but to be on the safe side you should store the data that is synced to your main computer to a compact disc or DVD. Then put this disc in a safe place in case you need to restore your pocket computer. You can also change the directory where your ActiveSync files are stored on your main computer to one that is a removable media device like a flash drive.
