The Galloping Gourmet convection oven is a table or countertop glass oven that can be used in the same way as many other countertop appliances. Not only can you bake in the oven, you can also broil, fry and steam. No longer manufactured, the Galloping Gourmet brand oven, along with the identical Decosonic brand, is often found at yard sales or flea markets and in thrift shops. Before purchasing, always ask to test the oven to insure that it heats and works properly.
The Parts of the Oven
The oven itself is four parts. The top lid includes the handle, the timer and the thermostat. The lid rack is to hold the lid on the counter when not on the oven. The elevated rack sits inside the glass bowl that completes the oven set up. Accessories that may be included with your oven are tongs, an extra cooking rack, a baking and steaming tray, skewers and an expansion ring.
Before you use the Galloping Gourmet convection oven the first time, clean the lid and the area around the fan with a damp sponge. Thoroughly wash the glass oven bowl and the food rack with hot soapy water and then rinse clean.
Using the Oven
Place the cooking rack in the glass bowl of the oven. Preheat the oven to the desired temperature by setting the thermostat and starting the machine. Let it run for 5 to 6 minutes to preheat. Place the food on the rack, leaving at least 1/2 inch between individual items, such as steaks, chops or whole potatoes. Place the lid on the oven and secure it in place by pressing the handle to the "on" position. Set the timer for the desired amount of cooking time. Foods cook in a convection oven in approximately 1/2 the time as a regular oven. Refer to the manual for exact cooking times (see Resources below for link).
Cleaning Your Oven
Clean your oven in the same way that you performed the setup. Never use steel wool or steel scouring pads on any of the surfaces. The glass bowl can be washed on the top rack of the dishwasher, if desired. For heavy cleaning of the machine, fill the glass bowl with water to the marked fill line. Add 2 to 3 drops of dishwashing detergent. Place the lid on the oven and lock in place. Set the thermostat to "wash" and the timer for 10 minutes. When the cleaning is done, allow the unit to cool and then rinse well to remove dish soap residue.
