The great room is actually three rooms in one. By combining the kitchen with the living and dining rooms, entertaining is made easy. While each zone may have its differences, the key to great room design is for the rooms to flow into and be a part of the other.

    One Foundation

  1. The stone floor unifies the living and dining rooms.

Create unity through flooring. By installing one cohesive floor type, such as hardwood, one space flows into the other seamlessly.
  2. Color Selections

  3. The grey and black color pallette unifies and defines the living and dining rooms and the kitchen.

Choose complementary colors and furnishings. Another way to unify the space is through the same wood stain and complementary fabric selections. Make built-ins and kitchen cabinetry the same stain as well. Add flair in the kitchen with an island that is a contrasting color or stain. Carry paint colors throughout the spaces.
  4. Create Zones

  5. The shaggy rug anchors the seating arrangment in this great room.

Use rugs to create living and dining areas. There are many ways to create separation without walls. Define the dining area by anchoring the table with a rug. Use another, but similar or complementary pattern to anchor the seating area. Another way to create zones is through furniture placement. Create a seating arrangement by positioning the sofa with a table behind it. This acts as a wall, keeping the space open and serving as one side of a walkway.
  6. Let it Flow

  7. The stairs offer some visual separation of the ktichen, yet traffic stills flows all around it.

Position furniture to allow for traffic patterns and flow from one space to the next. Don't block natural walkways with furniture. Reinforce them by positioning furniture to guide guests along. Angle chairs and tables to enhance this flow, keeping aisles clear and accessible.
  8. Get into Focus

  9. The fireplace and TV area are featured in this living room.

Establish focal points. Highlight objects such as a fireplace in the living room, a china cabinet in the dining room, or decorative hood and tile work in the kitchen. Use furniture placement, paint, and trim to draw one's eye around the room.
  10. Trim it Out

  11. This is a seamless transition with the white decor.

Install trim for space unity. Crown molding, window trim, and base molding are finishing touches in any room. In great rooms, trim further unifies three rooms into one.
