A bibliography page is usually the last page of a research paper, and it includes all of the sources used to write the paper. Before you write a bibliography, make sure that you choose the correct citation format. There are two main formats for bibliographies: MLA (Modern Language Association) and APA (American Psychological Association). Depending on the subject of your paper and your teacher's preference, you can choose the appropriate format. (Note: The bibliography page in MLA format is often referred to as a "Works Cited" page.)

    General Format

  1. Begin your bibliography on a new page at the end of your research paper. Center the word "Bibliography" (or "Works Cited," for MLA style) at the top of the page. Double space your bibliography, but do not skip lines between each citation. Start each citation along the left margin of the page, and indent all subsequent lines of the citation. Be sure to list any page references if necessary.
  2. Citations in MLA Format

  3. Begin each citation with the author's last name, a comma, author's first name, and a period. Include a middle initial after the first name if one exists. Then list the title of the book (underlined) followed by a period. Next, write the place that the book was published followed by a colon, the publisher followed by a comma, and the year of publication followed by a period. The following shows the basic format for MLA citations:

Last name, first name and middle initial. Title of book [underlined]. Place of publication: Publisher, Year of publication.

Check the MLA Handbook for directions on how to format more complex citations (e.g., online sources, periodicals, cross references).
  4. Specific Citations in APA Format

  5. Begin each citation with the author's last name, a comma, author's initial, and a period. Include a middle initial after the first initial (with a space between them) if one exists. Then list the year of publication in parentheses, followed by a period. Next, write the title of the book (italicized) followed by a period. Then include the place the book was published followed by a colon, and the name of the publisher followed by a period. The following shows the basic format for APA citations:

Last name, first and middle initials. (Year of publication). Title of book [italicized]. Place of publication: Publisher.

Check the MLA Handbook for directions on how to format more complex citations (e.g., online sources, periodicals, cross references).
