Tumeric, also spelled turmeric, is a spice made from the root of the Curcuma longa plant. This spice has long been valued in various Indian and Chinese cultures for its health benefits. Tumeric contains the active ingredient curcumin, which offers both anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Here are a few easy ways to add tumeric to your diet.

    Cooking with Tumeric

  1. Spice up your dishes by adding a little tumeric. This spice has a warm, bitter and slightly peppery flavor that is mild and unobtrusive when added to foods. Simply add a teaspoon of tumeric to soups, beans, vegetable dishes, canned soups, rice dishes and casseroles.

Saute your vegetables with tumeric. You can spice up onions, cauliflower and bell peppers by sauteing them with a dash of tumeric powder.

Add tumeric to chili, marinaras and pasta sauces. Tumeric's distinctive flavor will be absorbed by the tomatoes. This is an easy way to add tumeric to your diet if you don't care for the taste.

Put a little tumeric in your condiments. Tumeric is already in mustard, so adding a little more shouldn't be noticeable. You can also add a teaspoon of tumeric to ketchup, salad dressings and mayonnaise.

Make a tumeric dip. Mix a little plain yogurt with a bit of mayonnaise. Add a teaspoon of tumeric, and salt and pepper the dip to taste. Serve the dip with raw veggies, such as bell pepper, cauliflower, broccoli or jicama.

Add a dash of tumeric to egg recipes. Tumeric will turn your egg salad a bold yellow. You can also add a bit of tumeric to your egg mixture before scrambling it.
  2. Tumeric Tea

  3. Brew a pot tumeric tea. Just add a teaspoon of tumeric powder and a half teaspoon of grated ginger for each cup of boiling water. Let the tea steep about five minutes. Mix well and add honey or sugar to taste. Drink this tea on an empty stomach to receive more of the tumeric's health benefits. Make a thermos of the tea and take it to work so you can sip it throughout your day.
  4. Supplements

  5. Take tumeric supplements. If you don't like the taste of the tumeric spice or find it difficult to cook with, you can buy tumeric supplements at health food stores. You should take 450 mg. of tumeric every day to receive the spice's full nutritional benefits.
  6. Considerations

  7. Make sure you're using tumeric powder and not curry powder. While tumeric is the primary ingredient in curry powder, pure tumeric is healthier than when it has been blended with other spices. Use organic tumeric powder if possible.

Watch your consumption of tumeric if you are also taking any blood thinning medications, including aspirin. Tumeric affects your body's blood clotting abilities. Check with your doctor before adding tumeric to your diet.

Be aware that tumeric easily stains surfaces. Wash counters and cutting boards that come into contact with the spice. Wear kitchen gloves when you handle tumeric so your skin doesn't stain.
