There are three common methods to make hair scrunchies at home. A scrunchie is a hair elastic that is covered in an excess of fabric, making the fabric "scrunch" up, giving the hair accessory a puffy appearance.
Sewing is the most viable option for a beginner, as it only involves knowing how to sew a straight line. Knitting and crocheting, the other two popular methods, require a bit of prior knowledge and skill of the crafts.

  1. Fabric scrunchies are the most common variety.

Many types of fabric can be used for scrunchies. The best types are fabric that has some grip to it, such as cottons and cotton blends. Silkier fabrics do not grip the hair but may make a lovely decorative hair tie for a special occasion. Because of the small amount of fabric needed for each scrunchie, less than a quarter of a yard, sewing them from scrap fabric left over from other projects is viable.
A simple tube sewn around an elastic strip is all that is needed. Knot the elastic strip and sew the tube shut. The elastic strip can be secured to the outer fabric with a line of stitches or can remain free to move about within the tube. The benefit of leaving the elastic to move freely within the tube is that if the elastic breaks, you only need to undo one line of stitching to repair the scrunchie. If the elastic is secured to the fabric tube, you may need to undo several lines of stitching.
  2. Crocheting

  3. With crocheting, you can create a scrunchie out of a regular hair tie. A crochet hook and about 20 yards of worsted, or medium, weight yarn are all that's needed. Simply double crochet around the perimeter of the hair tie and work outward in spirals until the scrunchie begins to take your desired size and shape. Finish off with a simple knot and weave the loose ends of the yarn into the project to secure them.
  4. Knitting

  5. Using two double-pointed needles and a specific knitting technique called I-cord, you can knit directly around a plain elastic band. The I-cord knitting will create a tube around the elastic band. Knit a tube longer than the elastic band, and it will create a scrunchie-like effect. Use a tapestry needle to secure the two ends of the tube as well as to weave in the loose ends of yarn, and you have a functional scrunchie. Wool is an ideal choice for this project, as it grips the hair without too much of chance of slipping or sliding.
