You have probably seen the commercials on TV about memory foam mattresses that claim they conform to the contours of your body for a good night's sleep. Advertisements always show the product in the best light possible, but that does not mean they are always true. That's why it is so important to do your homework by researching consumer tips for buying a memory foam mattress before calling the number on the bottom of the screen.

    Memory Foam Trial

  1. One of the selling points of the memory foam mattress is that some companies will allow you to try it risk-free in your own home. Trial times range between 30 and 365 days. If you do not like the mattress, you are supposed to be able to return it hassle-free for a full refund. However, you will be required to pay for return shipping and sometimes the original shipping price if you decide not to keep it. If the mattress has any defects (stains, spills or rips) that you caused, the company will charge you for that, too.

When participating in a memory foam mattress trial, keep your old mattress. When the company delivers your memory foam mattress, they will often offer to remove your old mattress and dispose of it. This leaves you in a quandary if you decide the memory foam mattress is not for you, because you have nothing to sleep on if you return it.
  2. Two Types of Visco-Elastic Foam

  3. Visco-elastic foam, sometimes referred to as viscofoam, is the material used in memory foam mattresses. If you listen to the advertisements, you would think all visco-elastic foam mattresses conform to an individual's body because the material is heat-sensitive. But there are actually two types of visco-elastic foam that respond to temperature. One type is a harder material that reacts to lower body temperatures, while there is a softer, more elastic type that only reacts to higher temperatures. In short, this means that the particular memory foam mattress you choose should react to the amount of heat your body normally produces, or else the "heat-sensitive" claims made in the advertisements will not be true for your situation. The only way to determine if a mattress reacts to your body heat is to test it in normal sleeping conditions.
  4. Mattress Toppers

  5. Memory foam mattress toppers are products that lay on top of the actual mattress to lessen the amount of wear and tear. The toppers are typically made from thinner foam pieces (usually 1 to 2 inches thick) than the ones used inside the mattress. The foam topper contours to the mattress underneath. If there are sags or damaged parts of the mattress, the topper will sink into those areas and make them even more noticeable. Foam mattress toppers generally last between 18 and 36 months, but they are much cheaper to replace than the mattresses themselves.
