3D (or CGI) animation is used in movies, television and video games. One of the more complex tasks in animation is producing a convincing walk for a character. Smith Micro's Poser program allows you to create your character's walk automatically using its built-in "Walk Designer."

    Selecting the Figure

  1. When you open Poser, it opens with a default figure already loaded into the scene. If you want to use a different one hit "Delete" on your keyboard. Then click to open the Poser libraries on the right. Browse the "Figures" library to select a figure and double-click on it to add it to the scene.
  2. Limitations on the Figures

  3. Keep in mind that Poser's Walk Designer works only with humans (bipeds), so your can't use any four-legged animals. Also, don't select any custom-made figures you have rigged in Poser's "Setup" room unless they match the Poser parts naming conventions exactly. (The right arm has to called "rarm" rather than "right arm.") Unless you are sure you used the same naming conventions, use one of the native Poser figures or one of the commercially-available figures made for use in Poser.
  4. Creating the Walk

  5. Select "Windows" from the menu and click "Walk Designer." The Walk Designer dialog will open up. On the upper right you will see a number of sliders that let you chose from a number of pre-made walks (such as strut, power walk and run) to apply to your figure. Combine different walks to produce a totally different one.

Click on the "Figure" button at the bottom of the screen and browse to the CR2 file for the figure you are using. It can be found in the "Geometries" folder of your Poser directory. Select the walk you want to use, and click "Apply."

In the dialog that pops up, choose things like how soon the walk is applied in the animation, whether the figure starts from the static pose and whether it completes the last step. Click "OK." Close the "Walk Designer" window and your walk will be applied. Click on the play button in the timeline to watch the figure walk.
