Ideas for Outdoor Patio Entertainment

Anytime you're having an outdoor get-together, you'll want your backyard ready for fun. Being prepared for your guests with a festive atmosphere can start the party off on the right foot and keep the mood light. There are a few ideas for outdoor patio entertainment that are sure to relax your guests and make for a memorable party. Just be sure to plan ahead and be ready with games, food and activities, if conversation starts to lull.

  • Having a fun, party environment can start with the lighting on your patio. Hang paper lanterns, string up white Christmas lights or inflate a fake palm tree that lights up. Multi-colored streamers can be great decorations when run around the patio railings or walls. You can also add a fun look to your patio furniture with new cushions or a new paint color.

Games and Entertainment

  • A good supply of games and game ideas can spice up a party and create memories for your guests. Pool, darts and table tennis can all be played outdoors, depending on the size and location of your patio. Yard games, played just off from the patio but within your party area, can include croquet, horseshoes, volleyball or badminton. Depending on your guests, you can also opt for sillier, child-like games such as musical chairs, telephone, relay races or "two truths and a lie," which can be really fun for the right crowd.

If you have an outdoor entertainment center for your patio, your guests may also enjoy coming over to watch a movie or sports. You can also play music for guests to dance to as the party continues and hold contests for the best or worst dancer. Even if you aren't planning on having your friends dance, having music playing in the background can help relax guests and cover up awkward silences.

  • As with any party, indoors or out, you'll want to supply food and drinks to your guests. A simple bar is easy to set up to offer alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks of all kinds. A grill is practically a necessity for patio entertainment. This can be an area for people to gather while you're cooking burgers, steaks or vegetables for the party. Just be sure to have a small table set up with chips, dip, crackers and maybe a veggie or fruit tray, so your guests can nibble until it is time for the meal.
