Unique First Birthday Ideas
First birthdays are very special. This is the age when the little ones are learning to walk, and say a few words. Everything around them is something to be explored. Parents may be looking for something other than Barney or Sesame Street to use as a theme on their child's first birthday. There are a few unique themes suitable for a 1-year-old.

"Veggie Tales" Party
-
"Veggie Tales" are stories told by vegetable characters. Kids love them and parents can be sure their children are watching something wholesome. Parents can throw a first birthday party using this theme. Use balloons the colors of the "Veggie Tales" characters and even glue some google eyes on the balloons. Then play a "Veggie Tales" cartoon for the kids or provide some "Veggie Tales" coloring pages. Serve vegetables and follow up with individual cakes made out of Twinkies. First, the Twinkies must be laid out on wax paper. Then a few drops of green food coloring can be added to some white icing. Spread the icing over each Twinkie so that it looks like Larry the cucumber. Use colored M&M's to make the eyes and mouth. Place in the refrigerator until it is time to eat them. Each child gets his very own Larry the cucumber cake.
Zoo Safari Party
-
Children begin having a love and fascination for animals almost as soon as they are born. A zoo safari Birthday party would both be fun and age-appropriate. Find some first birthday party invitations that have animals on them. Decorate your house with stuffed animals and posters of animals you would find on a safari. You can cut them out of magazines. Create a coloring station with some crayons and zoo animal coloring books. You can then aid the 1-year-olds in playing a game of Duck, Duck, Goose. In the background, you can play the soundtrack from "The Lion King". Your cake can be made in the shape of a lion or bear, or you could make cupcakes with a different animal on each. Give the children each a safari hat, small stuffed animal, and a box of animal crackers to take home.
Rainbow Party
-
One-year-old children are learning all about colors. A rainbow party is a great way to focus on these colors. You can decorate the house with balloons and crepe paper that match the colors of the rainbow (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet). Rainbow colors can also make up the tablecloth, napkins, plates and cups. Children can color their own rainbows with crayons. You can then hide a pot of gold and help the little ones look for it. Inside can be chocolate gold coins for snacking on later. Cupcakes can easily be made with rainbows drawn on them with gel icing. Some other colorful food to serve would be Skittles, gummy bears, M&Ms and Nerds.
