Construction gear adds to the fun of a birthday party.
Construction gear adds to the fun of a birthday party.

Little boys are fascinated by large machines. They love playing with dump trucks and pretend cement mixers. If your little boy loves everything about a construction site, you may want to use that as a theme for his next birthday party.

    Decorations

  1. Decorate invitations by cutting them in the shape of a safety vest. Make sure the invitations include your job site (party location) as well as the date and time guests must report to work. Use yellow and orange balloons and crepe paper. Place them all around the party area. Attach several to your mailbox to show guests where the party is. If you have any caution tape, that would work, too.

Create some trucks, tools, and hard hats out of construction paper and hang them on the walls. You can buy cups, plates, napkins and a tablecloth decorated with trucks for the food table. Place toy trucks on the table as a centerpiece.
  2. Activities

  3. For your first game, ask children to get boulders in to a dump truck to fill an order. To do this, you must have a large toy dump truck and several bean bags. Place the dump truck 10 feet away from the throw line. Have the children take turns until all of the boulders are on the truck. You could also make this a race if you have one dump truck for each child (or team) and at least three bean bags for each child.

Divide the children into teams and give each team a set of blocks. See which team can construct the highest tower. For the tower to win, it must not fall over. When they are finished, you may want to set them up with a game of Jenga, which is another tower contestants try to keep from falling over.

Before the party, help your child make a round ball out of papier mache and then paint it black to be a pinata resembling a wrecking ball found on a construction site. Fill it with your child's favorite candy and then give the children each a toy hammer to break it open.
  4. Food

  5. Put out a platter of lunch meat and some condiments and call it a "build your own sandwich station." Once they've made a sandwich, add it to a brown lunch bag. Fill the bags with raisins, an orange, a little bag of pretzels and a juice box. They'll enjoy pretending to be construction workers bringing their lunch to work.

Clean out a large toy dump truck and stack some brownies inside. Slide some gummy worms in between the brownies so it looks like the dump truck is carrying a pile of dirt. You can place a candle in one of the brownies to sing "Happy Birthday."
