Whether you're celebrating a birthday, the end of a youth football league season or the Super Bowl, a football-themed party for kids is full of opportunities for play. Instant decorations are available at party stores, and there are plenty of options for food you can quickly put together.

Pick up stationary decorated with yard lines or make it yourself using clip art, and use a flyer format to make it easy. Type in all your party information, including day, date, time, theme and activities involved, and mail the invitations or have your child hand-deliver them to his friends. Include a phone number so parents have a way to contact you. Invite parents along to help out with activities or to enjoy the game in an adult viewing area.

Football decorations at party-supply stores range from hanging footballs, football-themed table items, football cutouts and football door decorations. Use actual football equipment, such as helmets and footballs, on the food table.

For a special decoration, find a life-size cutout of a favorite football player. You can sometimes find these online or at party-supply stores. Grab your digital camera and take pictures of the kids with the cutout and print them off as gifts before the guests leave.

In addition to organizing a game of tag football in the yard, have football-related contests for the kids. Set up a tire at one end of your yard and see who can get the football through the tire or who can throw the football the farthest. Create an obstacle course for the kids to run through, including tires or hula hoops. For a rainy or cold day, come up with an easy football trivia game or organize a fantasy football team for the kids to follow throughout the season. Pick up a football bloopers DVD or put on a college game (Saturday) or NFL game (Sunday) for the kids to watch.
  6. Food

  7. Marshmallow crispy football treats

Sub sandwiches, popcorn and chips are traditional party foods, but you can make your party special with some football-themed items. Make marshmallow crispy treats with some chocolate and shape them into footballs for fun finger food. Order a rectangular sheet cake with a football field on top. Frost cupcakes in your home team colors or put frosted pennants on the top. For a cold-weather party, make chili or order pizza.
