Most families spend the majority of their time congregating in the kitchen, making it the most-used room of the house. Replacing or repairing any inoperative appliances is the most important first step. Once everything is in working order, creating a fresh new look is easy and fun. Keep your kitchen warm, cozy and inviting with color, wood, tile and soft cotton fabrics.

    Color

  1. Kitchen with a blue wall.

Changing the wall color is one of the quickest and least expensive ways to update the look of your kitchen. Remove any grease with a grease-cutting cleaner, dust the walls, tape off any trim, and seal any cracks, holes or gaps with caulk before painting.

One current trend in kitchen design is to paint different walls different colors, which adds visual interest. Another great way to add contrast is to create a chair railing and paint a darker color below the railing and a lighter shade above.

If you are not going to change the appliances or countertops, choose one or two colors that will blend well with these larger static items. Copper, henna, ginger and gold tones are showing up in the newest kitchens as well as such appetite-stimulating colors as apricot, yellow and red.
  2. Flooring

  3. Parquet floor.

If you have worn, dirty or outdated kitchen flooring, it may be time for an update. Watch for sales on tiles, laminate and hardwood planks. A number of resources are available to teach you how to install new flooring yourself. Large stores, such as Home Depot and Lowe's, offer weekly classes in tile and laminate installation. Many of these products are so well-designed, you can resurface a room in a weekend and it looks like it was done by a professional.

If you have concrete floors under that old flooring, one very modern and inexpensive option is to stain the concrete in a color complementary to the room and add a few area rugs for warmth. When you are ready to sell your home, clean and modern flooring will significantly add to the resale value.
  4. Accessorizing

  5. Stained glass rooster.

Pick a theme for your fresh new kitchen. Whether you like Italian, roosters, apples, florals, rustic, Caribbean or Americana, it is easy to find kitchen towels, pot holders, lamps, curtains, placemats, napkin rings and dishes in your favorite theme. Or you may prefer a sleek modern look with the use of bold colors. In either case, refrain from overdecorating in the kitchen as it can easily become cluttered. Less is more.

Some great places to find interesting accessories is Steinmart, T.J. Maxx's HomeGoods and Kirkland's. If you are looking for roosters, Hobby Lobby has a fantastic assortment of roosters in every imaginable color and style.
