- Select 1 1/2 yards each of two fabrics, one for the outside of the diaper bag and the other to line the inside. Save the extra fabric for baby accessories. Choose a thick fabric for the outside to give it extra durability. You also need a sewing machine, tape measure, interfacing to stiffen the handles and walls of the bag, one grid bag bottom and Velcro, buttons or snaps.

Think about the functionality of your diaper bag. Some parents may need a large tote to carry enough diapers for a full day as well as toys, baby care supplies, a change of clothes, food and a compartment for parents' things. Others may only need a small bag big enough for a few diapers, wipes and baby food.
Adjust your bag's pattern to fit the desired size. Add enough inches to its width and height to make the bag a large tote; subtract inches to make it smaller. Add pockets to the bag's interior and to the front, back and sides of the diaper bag's outer layer. -
Reinforce your diaper bag with interfacing to support its sides and add a grid bag bottom to give body to your homemade diaper bag. The thick fabric for the outside layer also makes the bag more durable.
Make the diaper bag's straps long enough and wide enough for shoulder comfort when carrying the bag. Make the straps about 2 to 3 inches wide. Either sew the straps between the seam of the bag's top edge or make them long enough to be sewn all the way down, around and up the bag. -
Make the diaper bag according to your style. It doesn't even have to look like a diaper bag. Make the diaper bag versatile and usable beyond the time when you no longer need it for diapers. It can have a traditional appearance or a touch of stylish pizazz that camouflages its purpose.
