Metal roofing panels are one of the most durable and long-lasting materials available for constructing roofs. Many come with a 50 year warranty and require little or no maintenance. Though metal panel roofing can be difficult to install, it is possible for the DIY homeowner to tackle this project successfully by relying on proper planning and techniques.

    Selecting Materials

  1. There are four basic materials to choose from when selecting metal roof panels. Steel is the most widely used and can be painted at the factory or after installation. Copper is one of the more expensive roofing materials, but offers a unique look that is especially beneficial on buildings where part of the roof is visible through the windows. Aluminum is a more affordable alternative, though it is not as durable as steel. Stainless steel is an excellent choice for those living near the ocean, where salt spray and sea air will corrode many other materials.

Homeowners can choose from flat metal panels or standing seam designs. Some metal roofs are even embossed to resemble rows of shingles or tiles. Panel designs should be chosen based on the desired appearance, both from the ground and from higher vantage points.
  2. Prepping the Roof Structure

  3. Before installing metal panel roofing, the roof structure must be inspected and prepared to receive these panels. Start by checking that the attic space is properly ventilated and that vents and flashing will not interfere with the new roof. Sheathing should be repaired or replaced as necessary, and foam insulation can be fastened to the sheathing to reduce thermal transmission. A felt or vinyl underlayment should be installed over the entire roof surface using nails or staples. Overlap the seams of the underlayment by several inches to help keep moisture out.
  4. Installing the Metal Panels

  5. Metal roof panels are heavy and difficult to work with. Consider using harnesses and other personal protective gear to reduce the risk of falls or injury. Fasten lathe strips to the deck using screws or roofing nails. Attach the metal roof panels to these lathe strips at 24-inch intervals. Use screws or fasteners that are provided with the panels as they are often painted to match the roof. Cut panels as needed using a circular saw or electric metal shear. Once all panels are installed per the manufacturer's recommendations, install end caps and trim to complete the project.
