Cakes are a perfect way to display beautiful fall colors and special holiday themes. You don't need to be a professional to decorate cakes for any time of year, but autumn provides ample opportunities to be creative.

    Holidays

  1. The main holidays during autumn are Halloween and Thanksgiving. Make a cake that looks like a Jack-o-lantern for Halloween or a turkey for Thanksgiving. Jack-o-lanterns can be made using two 8-inch round cake pans and a 9-inch pan. Place the 9-inch cake in the center and use chocolate icing to draw on the face. Make a nice, fluffy orange icing and ice the rest of the cake up to the eyes, nose and mouth. Outline the eyes, nose and mouth in yellow. Place a medicine cup on top and cover it in green icing. Use silk leaves at the base of the stem or make them with icing if you know how. This cake also works well in a rounded Bundt pan, if you have one.

Turkeys can be made with three round pans; the first for the body and the other two to cut apart the feathers. Use the rounded side and cut the other side to match. It should look like this: (). You will get four to six feathers from the two round cakes. Place the main part down on a platter and place the feathers above it on the platter. Ice the main part of the cake chocolate and the feathers different colors. Bulk up the icing where you will outline the head and wings with tubes of decorating icing.

Other ideas for fall holiday cakes are ghosts, leaves and candy corn. Decorate a cornucopia on top of a sheet cake or try making a scare crow.
  2. Other Autumn Ideas

  3. Autumn signals the return of football season. Football cakes are easy to make and there are many variations. The cake can look like a football, a football field or you can customize the cake for a special team.

Make layered cakes topped with cinnamon sticks and dried apples. Sprinkle a tiny bit of nutmeg or cinnamon powder around the top layer. Create beautiful flowers with decorating kits in fall colors to place on top or around the outside of the bottom of the cake. Ice the cake with a basket weave and top it with dried apples, or create an apple with icing. Make your cake look like a walnut or top a spiced cake with chopped walnuts and pecans.
