The first step to weave extensions is to braid the natural hair into tracks. Tracks are used as bases for the weft of the hair extension, and they determine the type of hairstyles available while wearing the extensions. Before braiding the hair, first think about the versatility you wish to have while wearing the extensions. For example, if you wish to part your hair or style it in a high ponytail, small braids that are easily hidden will be necessary to successfully create those hairstyles.
Begin at the back of the head and part your hair horizontally to prepare a section for braiding. If you wish to create a more natural look, leave out 1 inch of hair all around the head to cover the tracks. After you have sectioned off the hair that you'll leave out, cornrow the parted section of hair and continue to make braids throughout the hair as necessary. Make sure to create strong, sturdy braids that are not too tight and do not cause tension on your scalp. While braids are the foundation for a good hair extension installation, extremely tight braids can cause scalp irritation and sores. For assistance on how to cornrow hair or create braids for hair weaving, refer to the resource listed below. -
Before you begin sewing, first cut off a section of wefted hair extensions and place it against your head to determine the width needed for the installation. Depending on your preferred hairstyle, a variety of lengths and widths will be needed for various areas on the head. After you've determined the amount of hair extensions, widths and lengths you'll need, you can begin the sewing portion of the installation.
The weft or solid base of the hair extensions is attached to the track by sewing thread through both the weft and the track. To do that, you'll need a large, c-shaped sewing needle and thread that can be easily camouflaged against your natural hair. For example, if your hair is dark brown, buy dark brown thread. C-shaped needles are sold at beauty supply stores such as Sally's.
Cut off a section of thread and tie it onto the needle, making sure to knot the ends of the thread. Push the needle through the end of a wefted section of the hair extensions and pull the thread through until you reach the knotted end. Next, place the weft against a track of hair and slowly begin sewing it to the track. Avoid creating gaps while sewing to keep the weft firmly secured to the track.
When you've reached the end of the braid, cut off any excess weft and sew a small knot at the end of the weft to secure it. Cut off any loose pieces of thread and continue on to the next track. When you've completed weaving in all of the hair extensions, brush down "leave out" hair to create a clean look and complete the hairstyle. Woven hair extensions can last up to three months with proper care and upkeep.
