Race to Better SpellingUse a poster board, white board or chalkboard to create a game board with two straight "tracks," one above the other. Draw spaces on each track for players to move their "men." Make two "men" with which to play the game. These might be horse cutouts, race cars or runners. If you are using a magnetic board for the game board, glue a magnet to the back of each game piece. Otherwise, you may want to glue Velcro tabs to each game space on the board and to the back of each game piece.
To play the game, divide the class into two teams. Assign each team a playing piece to use on the board. Ask the first person on Team 1 to spell a word. If the player spells the word correctly,he gets to move the game piece one spot on the track. Ask the first person on Team 2 to spell a word, and if the player spells the word correctly, she moves one spot on the track. If a word is misspelled, the playing piece stays put until the next round. The first team to reach the finish line wins the game. -
X's, O's and ABC'sCut a piece of poster board into quarters and draw a large X onto each of the four sections with a black marker. Cut another piece of poster board into quarters and draw an O onto each one. Make a life-size tic-tac-toe board on the floor using masking tape. Divide the class into two teams and name one team X's and the other team O's. Set up a table, two podiums or two music stands at the front of the classroom, and place a bell or other noisemaker at each one. Have one student from each team to the front of the class and tell them to ring the bell if they know how to spell the word you announce. Announce the spelling word. The first one to ring the bell gets to attempt to spell the word. If they spell it correctly, hand the student a poster-board X or O and allow them to stand in whatever square on the board they choose. Keep playing until one team gets tic-tac-toe. -
B-I-N-G-O Spells Fun!Using your computer's word-processing or spreadsheet program, make bingo cards. Type each spelling word correctly into a square on the card. Type each word incorrectly at least once on each card as well. Print out the cards and give them to your students with chips or markers for marking the cards. Announce the first word and have students mark what they think is the correct spelling. Have them call out "bingo" when they have marked a row of words. The first person to get bingo using the correct spelling of the words wins.
