School-wide themes provide a cohesive framework for the school year. They encourage communication by giving everyone the same vocabulary and encourage collaboration among teachers by rewarding the sharing of ideas. When the whole school uses a theme, all classes have the same reference points.
This theme focuses on the positive character traits that students should be developing: respect, honesty, perseverance, kindness and responsibility (you can add more or exchange some to adapt it to the specific needs of your school). You can focus on a specific trait each week or month or study all of them all together. Hallway displays should include student writing and drawing about the character traits. Have an assembly that covers each trait with performances (songs, scenes, poems) by students and/or teachers and awards for students who have best exemplified the trait.
Encourage students to "Shoot for the Stars!" Display class and teacher names on stars, use star borders on hallway displays and display the requirements for "Star Behavior" and "Star Work" in classrooms. Have teachers nominate star students each week and display their names on a constellation bulletin board. The star theme can then be extended to science classes as students learn about stars. Primary grade students can learn the differences between stars, planets and moons and about constellations. Intermediate students can extend their knowledge of constellations and learn about the different kinds of stars and the stages of a star's life.
This academically oriented theme can help all teachers plan their science and social studies lessons for the year. Each class or grade level can study a biome like the rain forest, desert, tundra, grassland and deciduous forest. Students can learn what animals live there, what plants grow there, what the weather is like and where the biome is located. Students can then put together presentations to teach other classes and/or grade levels about their biome. Continue the theme by having classes or grades switch biomes, and repeat the process.
