Buying a new mattress is a large purchase, so making sure you buy the right one that suits your needs is important. There is no timeline for how long a mattress will last, so determining when you should buy a new one depends on a few factors. If your mattress is ripped, worn out, or if you are no longer getting a good night's sleep, it may be time for a new one.

    Choose Your Bed Size

  1. Beds come in twin, full, queen and king sizes, as well as extended sizes such as California king (which is 4 inches longer and 4 inches more narrow than a standard king). For example, if you have a queen size bed and you feel it no longer provides enough room, consider upgrading to a king size. Moving to a larger-sized bed means the price also will increase, so decide whether you feel the price would be worth it.
  2. Research Different Mattress Types

  3. You can locate online sources to help you get acquainted with the types of mattresses on the market. A good website to review is bestbedguide.com. You can also visit a mattress store to speak with a sales representative and see samples of mattress in person, in addition to reading about them online. You also can have any questions answered and be able to test out the display mattresses.
  4. Choose a Mattress Type

  5. There are several types of mattresses to choose from, all ranging in different comfort levels. The most common type of mattress is an innerspring mattress, using coils and springs manufactured within the mattress.

Another popular mattress type is memory foam. Memory foam conforms to the shape of your body therefore giving you a comfortable sleeping experience.

A third popular type is an adjustable mattress, which has a mechanism inside the mattress that softens or firms the mattress by the touch of a button. You can sleep on a surface as soft as a cloud one night, then stiff as a board the next.
  6. Decide On a Mattress and Buy It

  7. After testing several different mattresses in the store, decide which one is the best and purchase it. Most stores offer financing, in case you do not have the entire amount to pay up front. Bring your mattress home, set it up and sleep on it for a few nights to make sure it is what you want. Make sure you check the store's return and exchange policy, in case you need to bring it back.
