- The easiest way to get rid of newly formed rust is to scrape it off. Using a kitchen scrubbing pad or steel wool, rub it against the rust stains. This usually removes small amounts of rust. A wire brush is also helpful for getting the rust off. Even sandpaper can be used to scrape off the surface rust on an iron. If the rust does not come off easily, apply a little mineral oil to the rust stains. This softens the rust and makes it more malleable. Then use the scrubbing pad or steel wool. This is usually all that is needed for small areas.
- Most commercial rust removers contain a strong acid that breaks down the rust. Lemons and limes also contain acid. Citric acid is a mild acid found in lemons, limes, oranges and grapefruits. These are natural and inexpensive products. You can buy a bottle of the juice or use freshly squeezed juice from the fruits. Apply lemon or lime juice to the rust stains of the iron to remove the rust without inhaling harmful chemicals. Use a cotton ball to apply the juice to the rusted areas. Leave on for five to 10 minutes. The acid makes the rust more water-soluble. Wipe away with a damp sponge or paper towel.
- All vinegars contain acetic acid, another mild acid that is known to remove rust stains. Use apple cider vinegar or white vinegar-- hatever you have in your kitchen. Apply a small amount of the vinegar to the rust stains on the iron with a cotton ball. Let stand for five to 10 minutes. Then wipe with a damp cloth or sponge. The acetic acid works like the citric acid, breaking down the chemical compounds of the rust. Vinegar makes a good rust remover if you use it as soon as you see rust forming on the iron.
