School is a place for learning, but that doesn't mean all the learning has to take place inside the school. Breaking up the class routine with a school trip allows teachers to open their lesson plans and incorporate visual and tangible aids that can help students soak up new information. Field trips open doors and create lasting memories students cherish long after they have graduated.

    Fun and Educational

  1. Trips that involve both fun premises and actual learning can be highly beneficial. Taking class trips to the museum, for instance, can help students put a face to history lessons or visualize a particular area of study. A trip to the planetarium can do the same for astronomy.

Going to the zoo is a great way to combine life sciences and biology. It also helps make the students aware of animals and their natural needs. Spiking a student's interest of nature with a trip to a state park or reserve also combines fun and learning.

Occupational trips, such as ones to the post office, doctor's office, farms and orchards, are always a hit. These types of field trips can be used to teach fire safety (fire station) or chemistry (bakery).
  2. Recreational

  3. While there is something to be learned in nearly every type of class trip, sometimes it is necessary to make fun the focus instead of learning. The end of the school year is a good time to take a school trip to the park, incorporating such activities as water-balloon fights or other games that allow your students to have a little fun.

There is also the option of allowing the class to be entertained while you sneak in some education. A class trip to the movie theater might sound like all fun and games, but not if the students see a movie that has some education value or take a tour of the projection room.
