Asbestosis is one of several major health problems that can occur after an extended period of exposure to asbestos. There are very few herbal and homeopathic remedies that have been directly connected with treating this condition. That being said, there are many remedies associated with healthier lungs and breathing that may induce a condition that is easier to maintain.

    Herbs, Part 1

  1. Mullein can be used as an expectorant to help relax the muscles in the bronchial passage. It is used in lung-affected diseases like bronchitis and tuberculosis. Ginger helps circulation and is also given during bronchitis to help eliminate excess phlegm. Garlic is an immune-system enhancer, it has a cleansing effect on the lungs and helps to encourage mucous to be coughed up. Cinnamon is a warming lung herb that is typically used in chest infections and the beginning of chest-based colds. Angelica also gives a warming feeling to the lungs and can strengthen the lungs when they are weakened. Thyme has antiseptic properties and has a calming effect on the bronchial tube. It is used for dry coughs and asthmatic conditions.
  2. Herbs, Part 2

  3. Elecampane is a smoothing herb that can be used for chronic bronchitis in the elderly and to heal nervous coughing. The coughs it produces are gentler than the typical dry hacking cough. Coltsfoot is also an expectorant that soothes irritated bronchial passages. Wild cherry bark can help treat the lung when it is damaged from strong coughing to the point of exhaustion. Condonopsis can be used for chronic asthma and coughs but it is important for asbestosis because it can treat lung weakness in general. It can help combat the fatigue that often accompanies the disease. Gentian is also important in helping weak lungs and can improve immune function in people recovering from long-term illnesses. American spikenard is used for colds, the flu and chronic lung problems.
  4. Homeopathic Remedies

  5. Homeopathic remedies tend to specifically cater to people based on their individual circumstances. A few examples of remedies that might help asbestosis sufferers include: Arsenicum iodatum (iodide of arsenic) has been used in lung cancers and tubercular disease where there is weakness, chronic lung disease and shortness of breath; Bryonia (wild hops) deals with asthmatic coughs, rust colored expectorant, and a frequent desire to expand the lungs for a longer breath; Crotalus horridus (rattlesnake) is used in cancers and lung disorders when accompanied by anxiety and labored breathing. It is best to consult with a homeopathic doctor who can identify your individual symptoms before trying a medication.
