Patterned Walls
-
Wallpaper is a traditional way to add pattern to walls. Paper is expensive and may not stand up to steam. Try it in a smaller powder room that does not have a shower so the paper won't have to withstand as much moisture. The powder room is smaller than a master bathroom so it will cut down on costs. Vinyl wallpaper can withstand mildew while simulating grass cloth for a natural or Zen-like bath.
Try a variation on wallpaper with DIY projects. Stencils can replicate wall paper and give your room a custom touch. Paint a graphic black-and-white stencil for a traditional or modern room. Add vintage flair to your room by creating a stenciled plaster treatment. Trowel plaster over the stencil for an embossed effect. Finish the wall treatment by adding several layers of glaze in your favorite colors.
Bathroom Wall Paint
-
Tiling bathroom walls is expensive and does not allow you to change design directions. Paint is cheaper and more versatile. Replicate the look of tiles by painting a harlequin or diamond pattern on the walls. Choose several shades of the same color so the paint treatment does not overwhelm a small space.
Paint the bathroom walls with random veins and spots to replicate a high end marble look for less money than stone. Acrylic paint allows you to use artist's materials. Just put on polyurethane after you finish so you can wash the walls.

Tile and Stone
-
Tile and stone are durable surfaces for bathroom walls if sealed. Stone adds in natural colors. Try slate for a rustic or contemporary bathroom. Stone in the shower area or on a focal wall won't overwhelm the space. Limestone or marble are high-end options that will make your bathroom feel like a spa. Look for larger stone slabs to place on the wall for fewer grout lines.
Wall Storage
-
Bathroom wall treatments can be functional as well as beautiful. Hang an antique mantel on the wall as a focal point in the room where you can store canisters and boxes. A Victorian mantel may include a mirror on the back for added light in the bathroom. Create modern storage through bathroom cubbies. Square shelves give a graphic element to bathroom walls when placed in a group.
