With the huge success Disney encountered with the movie "Cars," it's no wonder fans fell in love with its characters, such as Lightning McQueen and Tow Mater. Thus, it's common to host child birthday parties with a "Cars" theme. You can use the entire crew or just the favorite character of the guest of honor. Use the theme in the invitations, decorations and especially the cake.
Create a Tow Mater-shaped cake by starting out with a sheet cake. Make a template of Tow Mater's shape using wax paper, cardboard or an enlarged copy. You can use an image from an official coloring book or an Internet printout, or you can freehand the drawing if you are capable.
Freeze the sheet cake for 30 minutes so it won't crumble as you cut away the excess parts. Use a sharp, serrated knife to cut the cake into an outline of Mater. Draw the lines of his windshield, mirrors, doors, teeth and other characteristics using a thin piping of icing. Color in the various parts with dyed icing. It may help to have a colorful poster or toy featuring Tow Mater in front of you as you decorate.
Bake two loaf cakes, stack them and cut away the excess cake to make a three-dimensional Tow Mater shape. Another way to create a three-dimensional Tow Mater is to take a three dimensional car cake pan, such as the one made by Wilton, and cut away half of the top of the car. Removing half of the top of the car makes it look more like a truck, since there is only a front cab on a truck. Once the cake resembles a truck, you can begin decorating. Use icing, fondant, cookies and candy to enhance Mater creating his tires, tow bar, lights and teeth.
Oreos or chocolate donuts work well for the tires. Gummy candies, M&Ms or white chocolate chips are good possibilities for the lights. Mini chocolate bars can represent the side mirrors, being stuck to the cake with toothpicks. Use a pretzel stick for the tow bar and rope licorice for the rope.
The simplest way to decorate a cake with Tow Mater is to use cake toppers. You can purchase pre-made decorations and picks or use actual toy replicas. By using toys, you can decorate the cake like a race track with some grass and add various characters from "Cars." If you only want to include Mater, purchase a larger toy replica and place it in the center of the cake. Use green-colored coconut shavings or cut green sour apple strips into pieces for grass under the Mater toy. The best part about using real toys on the cake is that after the cake is served give the toy or toys to the guest of honor.
