Spider veins most commonly affect the calves and thighs.

Spider veins is a relatively harmless condition that affects more than 75 percent of adult females. Although this condition is also prevalent in men, because these web-like discolorations most frequently appear on the thighs and calves where they may be considered unattractive, females tend to seek treatment for the condition more frequently than their male counterparts. There are numerous surgical and non-surgical treatments for spider veins. Laser treatment is among the most effective of these treatment options.

    Determine Whether Treatment is Appropriate

  1. A person who has spider veins should consult with a doctor first to ensure the spider veins are properly diagnosed and to evaluate the chances for a successful procedure. Most people tolerate laser treatment for spider veins well, but the healthcare provider will want to ensure that that patient is in good health and is in a stable frame of mind, mentally and psychologically prior to the treatment. A medical history should be taken to determine whether the patient has any problem with bleeding or diseases of the vascular system. A patient who smokes will be encouraged to quit since smoking can retard the healing process. Since spider veins are a cosmetic issue rather than a health issue, some insurance policies will not cover this type of procedure. It is recommended to be prepared to cover the cost for this procedure out-of-pocket.
  2. Preparation

  3. Laser treatment for spider veins is almost always done as an outpatient procedure. Prior to going in for the treatment, the patient should avoid excess exposure to the sun and refrain from consuming alcohol and smoking for at least one week prior to the treatment. Because laser therapy affects the blood veins in the affected area substances with blood thinning qualities, such as aspirin, should be avoided for one week prior to the treatment. Always tell your healthcare provider about all medications that you are taking, both prescription and non-prescription, including food supplements and vitamins. Do not apply any type of moisturizer or skin cream to the affected area prior to treatment. Wear clothing that allows easy access to the affected area.
  4. The Procedure

  5. Most spider vein laser treatments are conducted in a doctor's office or clinic and can be completed in less than an hour. There is rarely pain associated with the treatment although pain-sensitive individuals may request a local anesthetic. After effects of the treatment may include redness at the site, a slight bump under the skin and occasionally a small bruise. These effects typically disappear within a few hours. Normal activity can be resumed immediately although it is advisable to avoid exposing the treated area to sunlight for a few days.
