- Winamp is offered in three packages that are available at no cost and a full-featured version which can be purchased for $19.95 (as of August 2009). You can download all of these packages from Winamp's site, and while Winamp themselves do not support language translations, a voluntary community of supporters have translated Winamp into a dozen or more languages. These language packs are part of what is known as plug-ins and are available for downloaded from Winamp's site.
- Winamp's three free offerings are full-featured software packages, with the Pro version having significant improvements made to the CD burning and ripping capabilities. All versions offer support for all the popular audio and video formats, the ability to neatly organize a media library, the capability to listen to an enormous number of online "radio" stations, and even the viewing of album artwork. As a service Winamp offers what they refer to as dynamic song recommendation, and for those who are unfamiliar with it, this feature looks at what is being listened to and then suggests other titles and artists that people with similar music tastes enjoy. This service can be an simple path for discovering new music to sample.

Plug-ins are additional functions that you can add to Winamp to increase its functionality. As mentioned earlier, languages can be added to allow people from all over the world to enjoy Winamp in their native tongue, and literally hundreds of other plug-ins can do everything from presenting visuals while music is being played to including an integrated alarm clock for Winamp.
Skins are a different add-on that allow you to change Winamp's appearance. This provides the option of over a thousand different skins that can customize Winamp's look and color scheme to suit almost anyone's taste.
Both skins and plug-ins are available for free and can be easily added as needed.
