- Whether the mother-to-be breastfeeds, she will need several feeding supplies to keep her little one full and happy. Purchase bottles, spoons, child-size dishes, take-and-toss boss and sippy cups and bibs. For the breastfeeding moms, don't forget breast pads, a breast pump and nursing bras.
- Big-ticket items will be needed. A high-quality stroller, highchair and car seat are necessary. Pitch in with friends or family members to get the baby quality gear that will last for several years and keep him safe. It's important to spend some money on these items as the quality is different from one brand to another, and the last thing anyone wants to risk is their baby's health and safety.
- Start the baby's library. Get books for the parents to read to the baby from birth and on. The baby will need a variety of books throughout the years, so try to choose one or two for each stage; plush fabric books, picture books, classic favorites, open-the-flap books and more.
- Put together a gift basket of smaller baby items such as toiletries, toys, pacifiers, burp cloths, bibs and linens. Throw in a few lotions, diaper rash creams, shampoos, bath toys, washcloths and towels for bath time. For toys, choose soft plush items as well as teethers, items that make noise and perhaps even a stuffed animal to snuggle with. Arrange all these items in a large basket, wrap in clear cellophane and then tie with a large bow.
- Babies go through tons of diapers, so a parent can never have too many. Get the baby several packages of diapers and wipes. Be sure to get a variety of sizes as babies grow so fast they'll need multiple sizes quickly.
- The new parents will be exhausted and won't have a lot of time to themselves when the little one comes, so it might be nice to give them something special as well. Gift certificates, food delivery service (so they don't have to cook), or even the offer of babysitting so they can have a night out are all great ideas. Or put together an "at home date night" package with a movie, popcorn, dinner, bubble bath and a good bottle of wine (or other beverage).
