When your child turns 1, it's time to celebrate. Reaching this milestone means that you have made it through the ups and downs of your baby's first year of life. At this age, your baby has no idea what the excitement is all about, but he can still tell that it's a happy day. Make this birthday party special for the birthday boy, as well as friends and family. You can also invite guests that are your child's age.

    Photos

  1. Show your guests how much your child has grown. Set up a table featuring photo albums of your child. Display photos in frames that show your child from the moment he was born to his present age. Or create a mural with your child's photos. Display an outfit your child wore as a newborn, next to an outfit at his current size.
  2. Themes

  3. When picking a theme, consider working around your child's favorite toy, such as a stuffed animal, doll, truck or car. Or you might like a prince or princess theme. Other common party themes at this age include zoo animals, alphabet, puppies or kittens.

Base your theme on the weather. If your little one was born in winter, choose a snowman theme. Purchase invitations, decorations, paper products and balloons that are associated with your theme.
  4. Decorations

  5. Once you have selected the party theme, choose your colors to decorate the room. Create several colorful balloon bouquets with 5 to 10 helium balloons, and attach curling ribbons to them. Place a happy-birthday helium balloon in the center of each bouquet. Use these balloon clusters to decorate the party room.

A brightly colored "Happy 1st Birthday" banner should be hung high on the wall, so that your guests will see it as they enter the room. Hang birthday streamers over doorways and on the walls.
  6. Fun Food

  7. Your youngest guests will love snacking on finger foods such as Jell-O Jigglers. Create or buy gelatin jigglers that match your party theme.

Kids will also enjoy simple foods such as cookies, ice cream or apple sauce. Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches are popular choices at this age. Or serve cupcakes and pouched juice.

Your adult guests will enjoy a vegetable platter with a bowl of dip. Set out trays of fruit, chips, crackers and cheese as well.
