Mayonnaise is a food condiment that many of us have in our homes. However, it can be used for more than just spicing up a dull sandwich! Using mayonnaise in your hair is an effective way of conditioning your hair. Conditioning with mayonnaise is particularly good for dealing with dry hair---moisturizing it, while giving it shine and body.

In this article, you'll learn how to effectively condition your dry hair using mayonnaise.

    How it Works

  1. Mayonnaise contains eggs, vinegar or lemon juice, and oil. All three of these ingredients are good for moisturizing hair individually, and the combination will give you shiny locks. The thickness of mayonnaise helps coat your hair with these ingredients and can also work as a sealant on split ends.
  2. How to Use

  3. Mayonnaise is best used on wet, clean hair. Make sure the jar that you're using has not expired---even though you're not eating it---because you want it to be relatively fresh. The best way to use mayonnaise as a hair conditioner is to first wash your hair as normal. Then, spoon out about a tbsp. for the top of your hair, working all the way down, until your hair is completely coated. How much is needed will vary with the length of your hair, but be sure to not use too much---or your hair can come out greasy. Rub the mayonnaise into your hair, making sure to coat every strand. Be sure to smooth the mayo into the ends of your hair as well. Work it throughout your hair, not just coat the top layer.

What you do after having the mayonnaise in your hair can vary. Some people find it best to just leave the mayonnaise on the hair and then rinse. If you'd like to deep-condition your hair with the mayonnaise, you can cover your hair in plastic. Covering your hair in plastic will heat up the mayonnaise, and your hair will get greater effects from the conditioning. You can use a plastic shower cap, plastic bag, or cling wrap.

Leave the mayonnaise in for a minimum of 20 minutes and a maximum of an hour. After removing the plastic covering, rinse your hair with cool water and shampoo one last time to wash all the mayonnaise out. If all of it is not washed out, your hair may smell like mayonnaise. After styling as usual, you will feel a difference in your hair. You hair will be conditioned and no longer dry, and should have more shine than before.
  4. Variations and Store Products

  5. This form of conditioning can be used as often as you'd like. Once a week or once every two weeks is good for the best results. Remember: Overdoing the mayonnaise treatment can lead to greasy hair.

There are many variations of this treatment. Add an egg yolk to the mayonnaise for extra conditioning and to make the hair thicker and softer. Honey can also be added to the mix, which makes hair shiny. If using mayonnaise out the kitchen is not your thing, there are several hair products that have the ingredients of mayonnaise in it. These products include Organic Root Stimulator's Hair Mayonnaise, Hollywood Beauty Mayonnaise Moisturizing Creme Oil, and Africa's Best Organics Hair Mayonnaise.
