- A scrub is useful in deep cleaning the pores. To make a sugar scrub, add water to a small amount of sugar to make a paste. Massage the paste into the skin. Leave on for 15 to 20 minutes, then rinse off with warm water. The tiny particles get deep into the pores and help remove the hardened oil, debris and dirt. This makes the pores smaller in appearance
- Steam opens the pores and softens the hardened oil. A steam facial is a good way to clean large pores. There are counter-top facial saunas that allow you to steam the face. But a less expensive method is to boil water at home, then turn off the stove and allow it to cool a bit. Place your face over the pot but at least 5 inches away to prevent burns. Let the steam clean your pores for 10 minutes. Rinse with cool water.
- For a temporary pore reduction, use an egg white mask. After removing the yolk of an egg, apply the egg white to the face. Leave on for 15 to 20 minutes. As the egg white hardens, it makes the large facial pores smaller. Rinse off with cool water to keep the pores closed. The egg white mask also gently exfoliates the skin, leaving it smoother.

Chemical peels are available at beauty salons and doctors' offices, but you can also do an at-home peel using the same chemicals. Glycolic acid is a popular fruit acid that is used in many skin products. But consumers can buy the acid in low concentration from beauty supply shops. Start with a concentration of 10 to 30 percent. Apply the acid to the face and leave on for one to two minutes.
With subsequent applications, leave the acid on for increasingly longer periods of time as you skin grows accustomed to it. Wash off with a cleanser and warm water. In the article "Large Pores" at the Healthy Skin Portal website, the authors write: "You can generally expect younger, softer skin from a chemical peel with noticeably smaller pores."
