Children are a lot more interesting than you'd guess from the bedroom decor proposed for them by commercial designers. Boys are offered trucks, sports or dinosaurs, often in dark blue, brown and red. Girls' patterns are usually restricted to flowers in sickly pastels or princesses in hot pink and purple. When choosing patterns for your girl's bedroom, don't settle for the obvious choices.

    Bright Colors

  1. In general, children like bright colors--usually brighter than adults are comfortable with. Favorite color schemes are often pairings such as red and green. There's some evidence that bright colors stimulate young children's minds and help them develop, so don't dismiss your girl's preferences too quickly. You may want to choose a wall color in a more restrained shade you can live with, such as white or yellow. The bright colors kids like look great against a white or soft-colored background.
  2. Animals, not flowers

  3. The natural world appeals to children, and the majority of kids love animals. There are wonderful animal patterns out there for rugs or bedding, ranging from dinosaurs to dogs and cats. Jungle animals are very popular, and elephant, leopard, parrot and bright-green rain forest patterns give fabrics the bright color schemes children love.

Many girls go through a period when they love horses. Some girls swoon for galloping mustangs while others prefer sweet, pink ponies or carousel horses. Find out which one your child likes.

Butterflies make a brilliant theme for a girl's room--but remember that bright colors usually appeal more than pastels. Orange monarch butterflies or electric-blue morphos in bedding and a mobile would look striking against yellow or green walls.
  4. Grab bag

  5. Glow-in-the-dark stars stuck to ceilings may inspire a celestial theme, with planets, the sun, moons and rocket ships as well as constellations.

There are lovely patterns available of sailboats and tugboats, or undersea themes with fish, coral and even mermaids.

Non-pictorial patterns, like dots, shapes, stripes, plaids and swirls, help you avoid the problem of finding a theme while still highlighting a girl's favorite colors. The colors in a beautiful pattern can inspire you in regards to wall and rug colors for the entire room.
