DIY Creative Ideas for Wedding Card Boxes

During a wedding reception, couples generally set up a gift table for guests to deposit gifts as they enter the party. Since many wedding guests choose to give a card (or a monetary gift inside a card), couples often provide special boxes to hold these cards. This eliminates the chance for cards to get lost in the shuffle of larger gift packages. You can make your own wedding card boxes with a few simple ideas and some creative arrangements.

    Repurposed Containers

  1. You probably have a "to do" list a mile long in planning for your wedding. For a quick and easy way to check your wedding card box off of that list, use a container with a different original purpose and make it work for your wedding.
Bird cages can be elegant and traditional wedding card holders. You can find one in a pet store or thrift store, or purchase a decorative style in a craft or home décor retailer. You can even spray paint the cage to match your wedding colors, and add a few flowers in the same arrangement as the bridal bouquets. Guests can slip their cards through the bars on the cage, or you can leave the door open for this purpose.

A treasure chest is another classic idea for a wedding card box. You can find one at a party store or home décor store, and it won't even require additional decoration or embellishment. Open up the chest on your gift table, and it will close up nicely to hold your cards securely at the end of the night until you have a chance to open them all in a few days.
  2. Add Color

  3. Purchase a hat box or cardboard box with a lid at your local craft store. Paint the box with craft paint; either use one of your wedding's colors or traditional white or metallic. Then find ribbon to match your bridesmaid dresses and attach it to the box using craft glue. You can glue a ribbon trim around the brim of the box's lid, or make a bow out of the ribbon and glue it onto the top.

You can also use flowers to decorate your box. You may want to start by adding a green floral foam shape to the top of your box lid; attach with glue, then stick fresh or silk flowers into this base.
  4. Creative Additions

  5. You can make your box into a cake replica by using hat boxes in various sizes to represent the tiers. Paint your box and use clay or silk flowers to mimic the design of your cake and its icing.

You can also use photographs of you and your spouse to decorate the outside of the box. Attach the photos to the box using decoupage glue so the box will last and the photos will be preserved throughout the year. Then you can re-purpose the box for a décor item in your home together after the cards have been removed.
