Erectile dysfunction (ED) affects more than 30 million men over the age of 50, according to the American Urological Association. In the past, there was not much information readily available regarding ED, Not much was known about ED, however, these days, there is a greater understanding of what this medical condition is about and options to control it. One of the options to help maintain an erection is the use of drugs, such as Viagra. However, there are a few other ways you can help to control ED.

    Psychotherapy

  1. Sometimes, the reason for ED could be more of a mental block rather than a physical one. According to the National Kidney and Urological Diseases Information Clearinghouse (NKUDIC), stress and anxiety can be just as detrimental to a man's erection. Going to a therapist can help relieve this anxiety and create a more intimate and relaxing sexual experience with your loved one.
  2. Vacuum Devices

  3. Another alternative way to fight ED is the use of a mechanical vacuum device. Before intercourse, you will place the vacuum pump over your penis and pump out the air surrounding it. When the blood flows to your penis, you will begin to have an erection. After the erection is created from the pump, you then remove the pump and place a circular rubber sheath around the base of your penis. The purpose of this sheath is to keep the blood in your penis while you are having intercourse. Please take caution however and read the instructions to make sure you know how long to have the sheath around your penis.
  4. Surgery

  5. There is also the option of having surgery. There are a few different reasons you may need surgery for your ED. One reason could be to implant a device in your penis that can erect it when you press a button located under the skin of your scrotum. You could also use surgery to help clear out the arteries that move blood to the penis, if they are for some reason blocked. In some cases, arteries that actually aide in leaking blood out of the penis during an erection may be blocked off.
  6. L-Arginine

  7. According to Alan L. Miller, ND, a Technical adviser for Thorne Research, L-Arginine is an amino acid that increase the amount of nitric oxide, which helps smooth and relax muscle vessels which is essential for a strong and firm erection, due to an increase in blood flow. L-Arginine can be taken in pill form or through foods such as meat, dairy, fish or poultry. It is good to note, however, that L-Arginine can cause complications to some people, so it is best to consult a doctor before taking any medication.
  8. Other Medications

  9. There are other medications on the market besides Viagra, such as Cialis, Levitra and Yohimbine that may be more beneficial for you to use, however again, it is best to consult a doctor before any changes in medication. Although medication can work effectively it is smart to be aware of the side effects.
