As icing flowers are the most common flower used for cakes, they are pretty if used in different colors other than the expected. While most flowers are white, yellow or pink, consider decorating a white-iced cake with shocking neon-colored flowers for a more abstract, modern look.
Consider a monochromatic look. An all-white cake with all-white flowers is very elegant and tasteful. Think about the scale of the flowers as well. You can make two or three huge flowers out of icing or dot the cake with many miniature flowers for a more abstract look. -
Use real roses to decorate a cake. Start by choosing a rose color that suits the icing color of your cake or the theme color of your event. Snip the roses close to the bud, leaving about half an inch of stem. Arrange the roses around the base of the cake and leave two to three roses to arrange in a cluster on the top of the cake. You can even reserve some of the leaves to tuck randomly throughout the roses.
Use the full-size, large roses, or opt for the tiny and elegant little tea roses. The larger roses will give you a more bold look while the arrangement of tiny tea roses will be more romantic and feminine. -
For a tropical- or summer-themed party, a cake adorned with tropical flowers is stunning and memorable. Select various orchids in colors of purple, pink and yellow. Find a florist who will sell you orange birds of paradise and palm fronds to tuck under the cake plate.
Start to tuck the orchids in a cluster on the top of the cake and then tuck a trail of them cascading down the side to the base of the cake.
