A washing machine that does not spin will not drain properly. Perform some troubleshooting first on the Kenmore washer to find out why it is not spinning. The owner's manual will be needed to find out how to access parts. Upon having the access, troubleshooting a couple of parts will pinpoint where the problem is taking place. Afterward, the faulty part can be replaced without having to pay for a repairman.
Before starting any repairs, disconnect the power supply to the washer. Either unplug it from the wall or turn the circuit breaker off at the electrical panel.
If the lid switch or the lid switch actuator are faulty the washer will not enter a spin cycle. Open the lid and make sure that that plastic actuator has not broken. If it is intact the switch should be tested. Use a volt-ohm meter to test the continuity of the lid switch. Set the volt-ohm meter to RX1 and place a probe on each terminal of the switch. A reading of infinity should be seen. Next, with the probes still attached, depress the switch. The volt-ohm meter should read near zero. If either of these reading is not correct, replace the switch.
Water Level Switch
The water level switch is used to sense the level of water in the tub. To check it, refer to the owner's manual on how to access the switch. Inspect the tube that is attached from the bottom of the washer to the switch. It should not be kinked or cracked. The switch has three terminals. Disconnect each wire from the terminals and label the wires.
With a volt-ohm meter set to RX1, check the continuity of the switch. Place a probe on each of the first two terminals. A reading of infinity should be seen. Next, place a probe on terminals two and three. Again a reading of infinity should be indicated. The final test you place a probe on terminal three and one. This reading should be zero. If the switch fails any of these tests, replace it.
Direct drive Kenmore washers are driven by a motor coupler rather than a belt. Remove the cabinet from the washer and locate the motor. Remove the motor assembly by disconnecting it from the water pump and wiring harness. Disconnect the motor from the washer by unbolting it from the bottom frame.
The motor coupler is mounted on the shaft in the rear of the motor. Pull the plastic coupler out and inspect the pieces for wear. Replace as necessary and reassemble the motor back on the washer.
