Party Games for Halloween Parties

There are a variety of games guests can play at a Halloween party that involve either skill or luck.

  1. Candy Corn Catch

    • Candy Corn Catch is a Halloween party game that children and adults can play together as team members. Form teams of three to five players, and have one player on each team volunteer to tie a plastic pumpkin to their waist, one with a hole on top typically used for trick or treating. Give each of the other players between 10 and 20 pieces of candy corn. Set a line to throw from (or one line for adults, and a closer line for kids). Players toss their candy corn and the person with the pumpkin moves around to catch any that are thrown off target. After each player has thrown all of the candy corn, count the amount of candy corn in each pumpkin. The team with the most in the bucket wins. Allow children at the party to eat some of the candy corn as a Halloween treat.

    Halloween Costume Scavenger Hunt

    • Divide guests into teams, with an equal number of players on each team. Give one member on each team a digital camera. Create a list of different costume types that the teams are required to take pictures of people wearing. None of the team members may wear any of these costumes -- they must be worn by people that are not part of the party. Assign points to each costume before the scavenger hunt begins based on how difficult you think it will be to find. Give each team two hours to complete the scavenger hunt. At the end of two hours, review the photographs and award points for each costume the team photographed. The team with the most points wins.

    Pumpkin Bowling

    • For pumpkin bowling, you will need 10 empty 2-liter bottles of soda and a small pumpkin about the size of a bowling ball. Fill the 2-liter bottles of soda about 1/4 full with pebbles or water. Place these bottles in a traditional ten-pin bowling setup, with one pin in the first row, two in the second, three in the third and four in the last.

Form teams. Each player gets two turns to roll the pumpkin from 15 feet away towards the pins. Remove any pins knocked down after the first roll before making the second roll. Score points for each player. In this game, the highest score a player can receive is 15 points for knocking down all 10 pins on one roll. Knocking all the pins down after two rolls is worth 13 points, otherwise each player gets one point for each pin knocked down. Total the scores for each team; the highest scoring team is the winner.

    Pumpkin Penny Pitch

    • Carve a jack-o-lantern before the Halloween party begins. Leave the top off of the jack-o-lantern so there is an opening. Give each player 10-20 pennies. Have each player line up 15 feet away from the pumpkin (though kids can stand closer). Each player takes turns tossing pennies toward the pumpkin. Players receive a small piece of candy for each penny that lands inside the pumpkin. The player that gets the most coins in the pumpkin receives a large candy bar or other prize.

    Halloween Pumpkin Hunt

    • Before guests arrive for the party, cut out as many pumpkin shapes as you wish from construction paper. Decorate each to look like jack-o-lanterns. On the back of each one, write a point value from one to ten. Hide the pumpkins around the location where you are having your Halloween party. When guests arrive, give them 20 minutes to search for the pumpkins. Then ask each player to add up the points on the back of the pumpkins they have found. The player having the most points is the winner.
