While stoves and ovens are often necessary for creating big, elaborate meals, many simple and nutritious foods can be made without either one. As long as you have a refrigerator to keep certain items cold--such as condiments, dairy and meat--numerous small meals and snacks can be whipped up with limited cooking utensils and knowledge. Some argue that not cooking food is a healthier way to eat, as cooking kills enzymes that are healthy for you.
Imaginative Tuna Fish Sandwiches
One simple meal is a classic: the tuna fish sandwich. With a can of tuna, some mayonnaise, a bowl and a can opener, you can make a lot of things happen. Mix the tuna fish and mayonnaise together and you have succeeded in doing most of the essential cooking. Add spices, onions, chives and other finely cut vegetables to this mixture, to give your tuna fish sandwich your own style.
With fresh, healthy ingredients--vegetables, dressings, some cheese--and a sharp knife and sanitary cutting surface, you can create a cornucopia of salads. Try spinach, mozzarella, pecans and apples and vinaigrette dressing or romaine lettuce, parmesan and caesar dressing for a caesar salad. For a little more "gourmet" option, try a caprese salad: evenly sliced tomatoes and mozzarella, with leaves of basil on each stack, drizzled with oil and vinegar and sprinkled with ground black pepper.
Meat & Cheese Plate (with Crackers and Wine)
Few meals are easier to make than a meat and cheese plate, yet few are more satisfyingly simple. Salami goes well with most cheeses, and havarti cheese is best alone. Crackers are a good addition for making mini meat and cheese cracker sandwiches and will be necessary for spreadable cheeses, like brie and goat cheese. A bottle of red wine will complement the plate--what kind depends on the types of cheeses and your knowledge and taste in wine.
