When you notice that your PC computer is beginning to slow down, you can run two programs, Disk Cleanup and Disk Defragmenter, to boost the system's speed. Both applications are included with the Windows operating system and can be run by any user with administrative privileges on the computer.

    Locating the Programs

  1. Both the Disk Cleanup and Disk Defragmenter applications are stored in the same location and can be launched directly from the Start menu. However, before running either program, you should first make sure to close any open applications or windows, because nothing else should be running while using the system tools. Once all other windows and programs have been closed, open the Start menu and go into the "All Programs" list. Then open the "Accessories" and "System Tools" subfolders and you will find icons for both Disk Cleanup and Disk Defragmenter.
  2. Using Disk Cleanup

  3. Click on the "Disk Cleanup" icon in the "System Tools" folders to launch the utility program. Disk Cleanup will begin scanning your primary hard drive to determine how much space it can free up to help make your PC faster. Then another window will open listing 10 or more options that Disk Cleanup can use to speed up your computer. Check the boxes next to the cleanup options that you want to perform and click "OK" to begin the system cleaning. The most important options to select are "Temporary Internet Files" and "Temporary Offline Files."
The Disk Cleanup process should take less than an hour to complete, and once it finishes, your main hard drive should have more free space, which should significantly speed up your PC.
  4. Using Disk Defragmenter

  5. Over time, files on your primary hard drive can become separated from related data and cause your computer to perform slower. Disk Defragmenter fixes this problem by reorganizing the structure of your hard drive for better performance. After clicking on the "Disk Defragmenter" icon in the "System Tools" folder, highlight your primary hard drive in the list of volumes and click on the "Analyze" button. The utility program will spend about 15 minutes analyzing your hard drive to determine how big of a performance boost it can provide. Once the analysis step has finished, hit the "Defragment" button to begin the defragmentation process, which can take up to an hour depending on the size of your hard drive. Afterwards, you should notice an increase in the speed and performance of your PC.
